The opening of the new Terminal A kicked off Newark Liberty International Airport’s renaissance - the beginning of a long-term effort to remake the nearly century-old airport into a world-class gateway for the New Jersey and New York region.
Terminal A represents a new standard for operational efficiency, passenger experience, and sustainability. The airy, 1-million-square-foot, three-level terminal replaced the previous terminal, which opened in 1973. Designed to accommodate 15 million passengers a year while leaving room for future growth, it features 33 gates, light-filled concourses, state-of-the-art digital technology, modern passenger amenities, superior dining and retail options, and inspiring art that showcases local artists.
An additional $110 million has been approved for an eight-gate expansion, with two new southern gates set to open in 2029, and six new northern gates set to open in phases beginning in 2030.
Terminal A is New Jersey's largest design-build infrastructure project: a collaboration by Tutor Perini/Parsons JV for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey with Grimshaw as the design architect in partnership with architecture and engineering firm STV as executive architect. Munich Airport NJ LLC operates the terminal and manages airport operations, concessions, and maintenance.
